Community Table – a design manual
As part of our exhibition Welcome to The Living City at 3daysofdesign’s 2023 festival, we designed a community table. We wanted to be able to gather people around for our big communal dinner and create a space for discussion groups and workshops. This was important to us, as we in BRIQ believe that meeting around a table, sharing a meal and discussing ideas is a powerful way to build and sustain communities.
In recent years, one key theme that really brings people together is food, taking the form of urban gardening, from farm to table, cooking from scratch and organic and locally produced produce. In particular, the concept of social dining and eating together is again becoming more popular, and more studies also point to increased positive health benefits when sharing a meal together. People who dine with others are more satisfied with the overall eating experience, they eat healthier and more varied.
In the name of community spirit and giving back to the city, we have created a design manual free for anyone to download by clicking here – Community Table design manual. The open source design is for anyone to build as it requires little to no skills to assemble, and can be done using only a saw, hammer or a power drill. By extending the design principles of the table, you can create new, bigger, smaller, taller or completely different objects that can help gather and support your specific community.
