Red Bank marks one of the first phases of the large regenerative development Victoria North in Northern Manchester. Delivered as a joint venture between the Far East Consortium and Manchester City Council, the project sets out to shape a greener and more diverse urban future for the city.

As an early catalyst within the wider development, Red Bank must from the outset establish itself as a lively and integrated part of Manchester. BRIQ was commissioned to define the urban life and ground floor strategy for the new neighbourhood, creating a clear and structured path towards a vibrant, mixed urban environment. In addition, BRIQ developed the streetscape strategy with the inten of merging indoor and outdoor urban life. To support this vision,  the concept of launch pads was developed, becoming incubators for the urban life, that we wanted to built organically in the area.

The strategy builds on the area’s inherent qualities. Two strong spatial narratives run through Red Bank: nature and history. The River Irk and the historic railway arches form natural and industrial corridors that structure movement and identity. Positioned between the city centre and a more untamed landscape, the site suggested an idea of “wild urbanism” – a place where culture, initiative and community can emerge organically within a varied and exploratory urban fabric.

Following this notion of wild diversity, Red Bank was structured into a series of distinct urban life zones, each defined by their own atmosphere and functional focus. As the area develops over time, this framework ensures that every new addition contributes something unique to the whole. Gradually, these differences accumulate into a coherent composition, becoming a neighbourhood where one could live for a lifetime.

To strengthen both identity and a robust outset, each zone is anchored by a dedicated urban life dynamo. These anchors act simultaneously as local hubs and outward facing destinations for Manchester at large. Defined by strong pull, recognizable identity, and sustained relevance, they create the conditions for smaller initiatives and communities to grow around them. Bridging the gap between public street space and commercial operators was essential to generate urban life. To enable this, BRIQ developed a strategy for launch pads, consisting of street booths, temporary pop-up concepts, and art installations which activates the street from the outset.

With the first buildings now taking shape, BRIQ continues its collaboration with FEC by translating the strategy into action. Through targeted curation and partnerships with local commercial and cultural operators, the vision for Red Bank is being implemented as the area begins to welcome its first residents and visitors.
