In Oslo, where the city meets the fjord, every connection to the water carries meaning. Along this shifting edge, Grønlikaia is emerging — a new district reimagining what it means to live by the sea.

Building on the masterplan, BRIQ developed the strategy for Grønlikaia’s urban life, shaping its neighborhoods, waterfronts, and the rhythm of its streets. The result is a framework that moves fluidly between vision and detail — from narratives of place to patterns of movement. At its heart lies our conviction that waterfront districts must be as captivating inland as they are along the water’s edge.

In the first phase, the ambition reached beyond creating a district — it sought to give Grønlikaia a distinct pulse within Bjørvika and a resonance across Oslo. A vision balancing everyday life with urban vitality set the foundation for development principles and programmatic tools. Each neighborhood was given its own character, fostering diversity within a shared identity. This became a living framework: a resilient, mixed, and place-specific strategy designed to evolve as Grønlikaia takes shape.

In the next phase, the work moved from vision to implementation. Through workshops and design development, the strategy was refined into tangible recommendations for the ground floor and public realm. Streets and areas gained distinct roles, each tied to movement and activity. A model for shared spaces took form — from small informal meeting points to a large adaptable communal house. Outward-facing functions followed a simple principle: quality over quantity and a curated mix of uses. Defined clusters and points of orientation now guide life through the district’s evolving fabric.

Working in phases allowed the strategy to mature — to be tested, refined, and reimagined. The result is a clear yet flexible roadmap for how Grønlikaia can grow into a resilient fjordside neighborhood: one that supports everyday life while inviting the wider city to the water’s edge.
